Georgio DeChirico (Attributed): Student Figure Study c.1905(304 views)
Georgio DeChirico (1888-1978)(Attributed): Male Figure Study, Oil on Illustration Board, c.1905. Signed G. DeChirico lower right. Painted in oils on illustration board.
This work is possibly a student effort from when DeChirico was studying at the Athens Academy of Art in the early 1900's. It shows corrections, revisions and pencil indications of a Roman Gladiator skirt at the model's waist. A seemingly unrelated sketch in the left background shows the three-dimensional rendition of a such a costume's detail.
Pentimenti reveals that the figure is painted over an abstract graphic composition with Greek Lettering and Roman Numerals, which reveals that the board was recycled from what could have been a graphic arts assignment. Note: Photographs showing the signature detail and the pentimenti have had the contrast altered to show details.
The painting has been lightly cleaned and varnished, with minor in-painting of paint losses. Corners of the board show wear. The painting surface shows minor un-repaired abrasions and embedded grime.
The painting is installed in a new wooden frame.
