Description: Phil Saxon earned a BFA degree in painting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and later earned his MFA with honors from Northern Illinois University. His artwork has since been exhibited numerous times in Chicago, Florida, and Milwaukee, along with various gallery showings throughout the United States. Phil grew up in the Milwaukee area and at a young age was inspired by the artwork he encountered at the Milwaukee Art Museum & Art Institute of Chicago. His influences originate from the modernists and early twentieth-century Expressionists. Phil primarily focuses on expressing the human figure in various media. His artwork is always direct and bold in both color and line. He uses ink, watercolor, thick and thin applications of paint, pasting techniques and often using surface texture to add an emotive quality. Saxons technique delivers complex tones, colors and surfaces that provoke a direct response from the viewer. Believing that we all experience a common range of emotions in life, he attempts to convey, in abstract terms, these universal experiences using paint, paper and canvas. An expert in loss and survival, Saxons work reflects his commitment to passionately represent the power of recovery and spiritual rebirth. My interest is in the emotional and human complexities within life and how to express through paint and paper my own personal experiences. As an artist it is important to trust my intuition when making artistic decisions as I create a piece of artwork. Believing that we all experience a common range of emotions in life, I attempt to convey these universal experiences in abstract terms. PHIL SAXON
