Description: Item # 5411. An ebonized side chair attributed to the firm of Herter Bros. Size: 34.5” tall and 17.5” wide and 16.5” deep and the seat is 18” tall. Incised numbers and hand painted numbers on the underside: " 48372” (the incised numbers are consistent in design to documented Herter Bros. chairs). Design elements in this chair are similar to one pictured in an article written by Brian J. Lang (Curator of decorative arts at the Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, S.C.): “The Art of Seating 200 Years of American Design” an exhibition at the Colombia Museum of Art, South Carolina. Mr. Lang describes the articles Herter Bros. chair: “ This formula is perfectly illustrated in their circa-1880 side chair, which incorporates a variety of artistic styles drawn from the Romanesque, Anglo-Japanese, and Reform Gothic design vocabularies. Made of . . . ebonized cherry. . . the seat back features a colonnade of Morrish or Romanesque-style arches. . .” “The Art of Seating” exhibition took place at Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina from April 28 through August 26, 2012. The last image exhibited is the example from the exhibition. Condition: old repairs to the under seat corners, scuffs to the painted surface consistent with use and age. Metal angle braces at the back of each back leg; split on the back center of the Gothic splat. From a Newport Rhode Island estate.
