Description: Julian Opie, b. 1958, is a British artist who presents a very distinct reductive style of graphic figuration. Employing a variety of media and technologies to make "paintings" of his subjects, Opie distills everyday images and experiences into concise but evocative signs and pictograms. In this sculpture here, "Tourist 2," you see Opie's iconic reductive workings on four city skyscraper buildings. As with all his subjects, he's stripped the buildings down, in both form and color. The towers can be displayed as a group on a floor or on a pedestal. "Tourist 2" is part of a small sculpture series of city buildings, that Opie pursued in 2000: "Tourist 1," "Tourist 2," "Tourist 3" and "Tourist 4." Opie has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, since the early 1980's. More than two dozen of Opie's portraits, landscapes, and other works are in the collection of the Tate, London; and six works are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Other public collections include: the British Council in London; ICA in Boston USA; Essl Collection in Vienna; IVAM in Spain; The Israel Museum in Jerusalem and Takamatsu City Museum of Art in Japan.
