Le Reve(312 views)
Description: Gouache and crayon on paper. Signed, lower right. Le Reve, an original painting and drawing by Marc Chagall captures the dream-like nature that is the essence of the artist's work. Two lovers tenderly embrace as the sun cascades through the open doorway to reveal the azure sea below. The bouquet, a recurring theme in Chagall's work, is grasped in her hand symbolizing life, love, growth and the cyclical nature of existence. Created in 1960 when Chagall was living in the South of France with his wife, Vava, Le Reve captures the sun and easy way of life along the Cote d'Azur. Born in Russia, Chagall moved to France in 1910 and became a prominent figure within the so-called Ecole de Paris. Chagall's poetic, figurative style made him one of most popular of the 20th Century Masters, while his long life and varied output made him one of the most internationally recognized. Mmany of his peers pursued ambitious experiments that led often to abstraction, but Chagall remained committed to figurative and narrative art, making him one of the modern period's most prominent exponents of the more traditional approach.
