Michael Powolny Style Zsolnay Figural Box Art Deco Era

Description: Item # 265. From the Zsolnay Factory in Pecs Hungary. Form number 8695 which dates it to 1914. The design was influenced by Michael Powolny and the Wiener Werkstatte of Vienna Austria. One of Powolny’s more famous forms was a set of figural “Seasons” and this example is a thematic copy of one of his examples. Factory marks of the era: printed circular mark; incised “Zsolnay” and form number “8695” . Size: 8.25" tall; 5.25" diameter. Condition: Tiny pinpoint glaze loss on the edge of the lid as issued from the factory; a little roughage on the underside of the lid with no glaze loss, just common usage of the past 100 years; no restorations or repairs. A small putti stands on a grassy knoll holding his cache of flowers. Box sitting on three feet. Glaze: mottled green metallic eosin against an ocher ground. Very few examples exist reflecting this Viennese influenced design.
