Description: A pair of Japanese Shinto guardian lion dogs, called" komainu", in carved, gilded and polychromed wood, each imposing muscular dog with black mane, tail and feet, one carved with a closed mouth and the other open, each mounted with glass eyes. Wonderful old surface. Komainu are lion-like guardian dogs, usually placed at the entrances of temples and shrines. The form likely came to Japan from China via Korea. Height: 13 1/4" and 12 1/4". Width: 12". Depth: 6".
