Rhode Island - The Governor's Rare Book(131 views)
Description: [RHODE ISLAND] Offered here is an early book on grammar. This particular copy lacks the title page & pages 1-6. Written in several sections, each with their own title page, the first one appearing on page 63, which is dated 1714. This book was once owned by Gideon Wanton (1693-1767) who was the Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations who served for two separate one-year terms [1745-1746 and 1747-17480]. On the inside of front book-board, signed in ink "Gideon Wanton God gave him grace the....???? [not sure about the words written because they are difficult to makeout]. Pages to 195 are numbered, followed by some pages not numbered. Therefore on page 211 [not numbered] appears another ink signature G. Wanton. The handwriting of the first inscription is crude but the signature later is nicely written. It is possible that Gideon himself penned both signatures at different periods in life but we cannot be sure. Besides the missing first 6 pages, the leather binding is very worn. Very rare!!!!.
