Robert Vickrey was born in 1926. Vickrey attended Yale where he received his B.A. in 1947. He then went on to study at the Art Students League in New York, where he worked under Kenneth Hayes Miller and Reginald Marsh. Afterwards he returned to Yale to receive his Master in Fine Arts. Vickrey’s medium of choice was egg tempera, a process that requires the artist make their own paint by mixing finely ground color pigments, water, and diluted egg yolk. Typically praised for his skillful use of this medium, Vickrey rendered a realistic depiction of subjects and their surroundings, which frequently included textured surfaces that were made to appear highly tactile.
Interesting to note is Vickrey’s ability to merge his highly realistic visual style with surreal undertones, as seen in The Blue Top. The artist admitted that his work has “strong psychological overtones” and the ethereal quality of his subjects is an intentional juxtaposition to his realistic depiction of the surrounding in his work. This contrast is what set Vickrey’s work apart.
