Description: Paper, reverse painted glass, and gilt wooden frames. William Hayes (1729-1799) Southall, Middlesex, England is known for his "Portraits of British and Exotic Birds," published under the patronage of the Fourth Earl of Sandwich in 1778. These three are hand-colored and framed with eglomise (reverse-painted glass) to create the effect of matting, probably in the early 1930s. They are: Plate #220 - "Grenadier Grosbeak"; #269 - "Chinese Duck"; and #289 - "Waxen Chatterer Male" .
Condition Report: Condition: excellent - some minimal yellowing of the paper - some minor chips on the frames - nice patina.
