This painting captures the desolation and majesty of the Payne Lake near Humphrey's Basin in the Sierra Mountains with its craggy rock faces, trees and rivers. Signed lower left and displayed in period, painted black, giltwood trimmed frame. Image, 16"H x 20"L. Nell Walker Warner was born in Richardson County, Nebraska and was a graduate of the Lexington, MO Women’s College and studied at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design. She studied locally with Nicolai Fechin, Fritz Werner, and Paul Lauritz and was art curator of the Tuesday Afternoon Club. She moved to Carmel, CA in 1952 and lived there until 1970. Los Angeles Times art critic Anthony Anderson stated that she was one of the ablest floral painters America has produced. In addition of her floral still lifes, her work includes landscapes of California and New England coast.
