Description: A pair of W.A.S. Benson Brass Aesthetic Movement Candlesticks. “Another Morris protege, W.A.S. Benson (1854-1924), ‘made his name . . . as a reformer of oil-lamps and candelabra which he redeemed from the bondage of early Victorian taste.’ Persuaded by Morris in 1880 to leave his apprenticeship with the architect Basil Champneys and set up business as a metal work manufacturer, Benson made rapid progress, first building a factory in Hammersmith and then in 1887 opening his own shop in New Bond Street. . . . On Morris’s death he became chairman of Morris & Co.” This pair of (unsigned) Benson designed candlestick are 12.75” long and 5” wide and 5” tall. Solid brass.
