Zsolnay Circa 1900 Art Nouveau Pan Vase

Description: # 320. A floor vase from the Zsolnay Factory. Form number 5902 dating it 1900. This year the factory released the most number of art forms in its history. The important vase was designed by Lajos Mack. Original design in the Zsolnay factory form book No. 9; drawing No. 5902. Identical vases published in catalogues, books, etc. and shown in many exhibitions including most recently at BARD College in New York City. Background glaze: purple faintly dully metallic with in relief three figures (pan and two women) in dull gold metallic glazes. The color separation is very good with the figures and trees show in contrast to the background. The symbolism represents 'Arcady' with its idyllic pastoral scene. The Faun (pan) figure playing its pipe representing a shepherd here represents all nature. An identical decor was in the collection of Rudolf Schmutz of Vienna, Austria and documents in books of his collection.
