RODNEY DISNEY DAVIDSON AO OBE LLB
13 April 1933 – 13 April 2016

It is our great privilege to offer for sale the collection of the late Rodney Davidson AO, OBE, LLB. It is an honour not only due to the quality and grand nature of the collection, but also due to the high esteem and regard that Rodney was held by the Arts, National Trust and Business Community. Collecting had long been a passion of Rodney’s and he was known internationally for his exquisite eye for detail, and his extensive knowledge of the collecting world. His book collection, that was progressively sold over a number of years, was regarded as the best privately owned collection of historical Australian Books ever assembled. His enthusiasm for collecting never waned however, and with his highly successful Book Auction long since passed, his extensive, private and personal collection is now up for sale

Rodney Davidson was born in Melbourne on 13 April, 1933. The son of Charles Davidson and Catherine Disney. He grew up in Lansell Road, Toorak and was educated at Melbourne Grammar. From the late 1940s he developed an increasing interest in collecting the books that documented Australia’s early history. Extensive travel also open his eyes to the International World of collecting, and his focus extended beyond books and into other items of beauty. This interest in collecting turned into a life long passion. While Rodney was involved with a wide variety of business and community organisations, his major contribution to society was his involvement with the National Trust movement, particularly in Victoria.

As well as serving as President of the Trust from 1986 Rodney Davidson was also Chair of the Australian Council of National Trusts from 1982 to 1991. From 1986, Rodney was Chair of the Royal Exhibition Buildings Trust, during which time the buildings was restored to its original form. He also chaired the W. R. Johnston Trust from 1995 to 2009. In recognition of his public service to the heritage of the Nation he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1974 and in 1989 was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO). To many, Rodney was an inspiration as a collector, connoisseur and protector of Australian history and buildings.

Rodney always loved to surround himself with things of beauty and the items in this auction are indicative of his exquisite taste and knowledge. The auction includes furniture, decorative arts, jewellery and many fine pieces that he had collected over the last 70+ years. Of particular note is the important collection of paintings by James Gleeson including the major surrealist work Sea-wrack Involving the Heads of Tristan and Isolde, painted in London in 1947. Rodney enjoyed a personal friendship with James Gleeson and built up this collection over decades. We hope that with this public sale of Rodney’s remaining items, others will have the honour and privilege of sharing in his enthusiasm, passion and vision.
