Roland Sawyer (1874 - 1969) Socialist

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: Roland Douglas Sawyer (1874 - 1969) was a Congregationalist minister and for nearly 30 years a Massachusetts state legislator. He is best remembered as one of the leading Christian socialists of the first decade of the 20th century and as the author of an array of self-published books and pamphlets on genealogy and the local history of New England. In about 1907, the previously conservative Sawyer began to gain an interest in Christian socialism, a growing movement in that day. Sawyer joined the Socialist Party of America and ran for Governor of Massachusetts on the Socialist ticket in 1912. Running as a Democrat in the fall of 1913, Sawyer ran for the Massachusetts General Court, the state legislature. Unlike his previous electoral experiences, this time Sawyer won his race for office. He ran for re-election and won every two years thereafter for more than a quarter century, sitting in the Massachusetts General Court until 1941. Sawyer took an interest in the case of Sacco and Vanzetti, two anarchists accused of murder in conjunction with a 1920 armed robbery in South Braintree, Massachusetts, and was active in the unsuccessful campaign to win the pair a stay of execution and a new trial. In the Massachusetts General Court, Sawyer was regarded as a crusader against political corruption. Sawyer ran three more campaigns for higher political office as a Democrat, all without success: for U.S. Congress in 1925, a second try for Governor of Massachusetts in 1928, and a race for U.S. Senate in 1930. Offered here is a scrapbook he created starting around 1903, about 107 pages. He has titled the covers MY ATTEMPTS AT POETRY - Some Verses and Chants. A Complete Collect". On the 1st page he writes "My Attempts at Verse R.D.S.". (Inventory 38)

American Physicist Louis W. McKeehan

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: [SCIENCE - WAR] The following are from the papers of the American physicist Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Offered here are several pieces. Includes: 1940 letter to his wife Grace [scan 1]; a 1932 Naval Reserve Fitness document signed by McKeehan [scan 2]; an interesting 1940 document pencil signed by McKeehan [scan 3]; plus 5 other pieces, all showing below. Albert E. Gallatin Shows His Dark Side

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: Albert E. Gallatin (1881-1952) Gallatin wrote about, collected, exhibited, and created works of art. Called "one of the great figures in early 20th-century American culture," he was a leading proponent of nonobjective and later abstract and particularly Cubist art whose "visionary approach" in both collecting and painting left "an enduring impact on the world of modern art." Gallatin was a collector, art historian, and founder of the first museum gallery devoted exclusively to modern art in the U. S. Gallatin was born to wealth; his great grandfather, Albert Gallatin (1761-1849), had been Secretary of he Treasury of the United States under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In 1902 he inherited the family banking and investment fortune, which set him on a career of art collecting and criticism. Showing a youthful interest in art and literature, he began to collect works by Max Beerbohm, Aubrey Beardsley, and James McNeill Whistler while still in his teens. As he collected art, he also began to write about it. For the two decades following the turn of the century, Gallatin produced a constant stream of articles, small monographs, and books of engraved plates. Between 1900 and 1910 most of these concerned Beardsley and Whistler. His interests expanded to modern art during World War I. After the war, he made frequent trips to Paris, beginning in 1921 buy art from the major dealers there. Initially he donated works to the Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1922. These museums, however, avoided the work of American artists. Gallatin actively bought work from the so-called Ash Can School in the United States. He used his position as trustee for New York University to establish the first museum in the U. S. dedicated solely to modern art, the Gallery of Living Art, located in South Study Hall that university. The gallery included works by Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Léger. Gallatin wrote the catalogs, which were issued between 1928 and 1940. In 1926 he co-published with the classicist/collector Joseph Hoppin the first fascicule of the prestigious Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum for a United States collection. Between 1928 and 1933 works by Joan Miro, André Masson, Robert Delaunay, Piet Mondrian, and Jean Arp were added to his gallery, the first to enter a public collection in the U. S. In 1936 Gallatin renamed his museum the "Museum of Living Art" with his purchase of Picasso's Three Musicians (1921). Gallatin ceased his French buying trips in 1938 with the declaration of hostilities with Germany. Instead, he focused on American art. The later abstract expressionists Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning attributed their early development to the Museum of Living Art. The University closed the museum in 1943 and Gallatin moved the collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, donating it at his death in 1952. Gallatin wrote largely about the art he collected, some of it, for example, the Ash Can School, was little valued at the time he made his purchases. James Johnson Sweeney, later curator of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, praised Gallatin in 1931 for showing the widest range of cubism in America, which the fledging Museum of Modern Art, founded two years after Gallatin's museum by Alfred H. Barr, would spend the next decade amassing a similar collection. Gallatin's space at NYU is today Grey Art Gallery and Study Center. In 1942 Gallatin was referred to as New York's "abstract king" in a profile that appeared in the "Talk of the Town" section of the New Yorker magazine. Offered here is a manuscript letter signed with his nickname "Bertie". He makes a drawing of a man shooting at another man. This was sent to his friend George Page Ely (1879-1967) who was the son-in-law of the noted American artist, Julian Alden Weir; and he was also Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Not dated, written on Windsor Hotel, Haifa, Palestine stationery. RARE! Provenance: Old Lyme, Connecticut, Estate belonging to descendants of American Impressionist artist Julian Alden Weir. RARE!. Rosily - French Naval Commander

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: [FRANCE - NAVAL] François Étienne de Rosily-Mesros (1748-1832) French naval commander of the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. He is notable as being chosen by Napoleon to succeed Villeneuve as commander of the combined Franco-Spanish fleet at Cadiz fleet, arriving to take up his appointment just after its defeat at Trafalgar. His name is inscribed on the east side of the Arc de Triomphe. His father the comte de Rosily was a chef d’escadre and was commanding the Brest fleet in 1762 when he admitted François as a garde de marine. From 1762 to 1769 François completed his apprenticeship at sea in several varied campaigns, visiting Rio de Janeiro, Newfoundland, Hispaniola and the Antilles. He became an enseigne de vaisseau in 1770, on a ship commanded by Kerguelen. Under Kerguelen he then went on a surveying trip along the French coast before setting out on a circumnavigation of the globe whose aim was to research the unknown 'Terra Australis' for France. On 13 February 1772 it was believed he had discovered it and Rosily was sent out in a launch to reconnoitre it. On the launch's return, however, Kerguelen's frigate had disappeared. Miraculously rescued by the fluyt Gros-Ventre, Rosily travelled on her for 8 months and finally reached France in 1773. He left immediately afterwards to rejoin Kerguelen, who was by then once again on his way out east in an attempt to find the 'Terra Australis' and rescue Rosily. Rosily caught up with Kerguelen at Mauritius, where he was put in command of the corvette Ambition : this voyage lasted 14 months. On Rosily's next return to France, at the end of 1774, he rushed to visit the ports of Great Britain, Scotland and Ireland, bringing back several inventions and materials of use to the French navy, such as chain pumps. He rose to lieutenant de vaisseau in 1778 on the lugger Coureur, with which he patrolled the English channel under the command of la Clocheterie, commander of the frigate Belle-Poule. On 17 June that year Belle-Poule was attacked by the Royal Navy frigate Arethusa and the 14-gun cutter Alert. Rosily did not hesitate to attack the Alert and saved the Belle-Poule despite the Coureur being completely dismasted, holed on all sides and finally forced to surrender. He was awarded the croix de Saint-Louis for this action and returned to Brest in February 1780. In May 1780 he took command of the frigate Lively. He then served as lieutenant en pied, in 1781, on board the ship of the line Fendant, before exchanging this command for that of the frigate Cléopâtre and rallying to the bailli de Suffren's squadron at Trincomalee. When peace and American independence came, hostilities in the Indian Ocean ceased and the bailli de Suffren's fleet returned to France. The following year Rosily was promoted to capitaine de vaisseau. Offered here is a brief Autograph Document Signed [ADS], Brest 1778, approx. 7 x 4 in. Not translated. VG. RALPH BAKSHI drawing

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. ORIGINAL Ink drawing, unsigned on 6-3/4 x 8 in. sheet. As this was a "working study" there was no reason for him to have signed it. VG (Inventory 18)

RE: Titled "STOVE", the text recounts De Koonings' practice of getting started on a blank canvas. "I've read that De Kooning was afraid to look at a blank canvas. Sometimes to get started he would look around the room and fix on an object - a stove a table, a chair, and write the word "chair", for instance across the canvas so it wouldn't be blank anymore. At this time there were two groups of abstract expressionists. The other was more structured and probably the forerunners of minimalism and late conceptualism. I liked his group better although lately I have removed all the furniture from the studio, I kept the stove, and in the evenings when it is cold I sit in front of it to keep warm." (Inventory 14)

Richard Black Etching

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: Richard Black is a highly regarded printmaker who has made a significant contribution over the years to the arts in Iowa. For thirty years he was a professor of art at Drake University where he founded the Drake University Biennial Print Symposium. The symposium brought nationally known artists to the state to demonstrate and lecture on the art of printmaking. Black himself has been the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center and has been honored with the DRAKE AWARD for excellence in teaching and artistic achievement. Black's works are included in many museum collections and have been shown in invitational and competitive exhibitions all over the country. Using the intaglio process, Black creates prints that have a collage-like feeling. Tightly rendered textures and color patches are layered and structured to create overall pattern. The work appears to be abstract, but when closely examined recognizable forms sometimes emerge. These images are enigmatic and are woven into the intricacy of the print, there for the viewer to decipher. Black's works are often inspired by tales and interpretations from The Old Testament. Original aquatint-etching, signed in pencil, titled "Blossoms Mid-Air: R", numbered XVIII/XXV, approx. 13-1/8 x 10-1/2" plus clean margins. A superb print. (Inventory 30)

Uncle of Abraham Lincoln Signed Document 1805 Kentucky

Ships From: Wells, ME US

Description: Kentucky Pioneer document dated 1805, summons for Williamson Bruce to appear before the Judges of Hardin County [Elizabethtown] Kentucky. They are to answer William Bush plaintiff. William Bush, brother of Sarah who was Abraham Lincoln's step-mother, therefore William Bush was Abe's uncle by marriage. This document was written and signed by the noted Kentucky pioneer, Ben Helm. Also signed by William Bush on the verso. BEN HELM (b. Fairfax county, Va., May 8, 1767; son of Capt. Thomas Helm, apioneer settler of Kentucky, who moved from Virginia to the Falls of Ohio, in the fall of 1779. In 1801-03 Ben Helm erected the first brick house built there. He became a surveyor; was state senator, 1796-1800; clerk of the Hardin county courts, 1800-17; an officer with the rank of major in the war of 1812; filled various other offices of honor and trust in Kentucky: purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sarah (Bush) Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln, and was a partner in a general store with Duff Green [later, American statesman], conducting the business as Green & Helm. He died in Elizabethtown, 1858, nearly 91 years old.Apparently William Bush was somewhat of a troublemaker in the E-town area. He was born in 1763, and in 1828 he acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana. His sister, Sarah, became the step-mother of the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. See the article THAT ROGUE, WILLIAM BUSH, by Blaine V. Houmes, the Iowa physician and collector of Lincolniana. This article appears in The MANUSCRIPT, Summer 2002. William Bush acquired land like his parents, and by 1817 had married and built an attractive brick house [Elizabethtown area], a sign of sure success. He served on jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of Abraham and acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana∞, and later Illinois. Although prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits. His reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect of other members of the Bush family. Little is known of Lincoln's relationship with the Bush family. Lincoln claimed that his family's removal (to Indiana) was partly on account of slavery, but chiefly on account of the difficulty in land titles in Kentucky. Thomas Lincoln was known to be anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road beside his home. Carl Sandburg and other historians have not dwelt on the cantankerous nature of the President's uncle by marriage, let alone the fact that there was a slave-trader in the family. We wish to give credit to Blaine Houmes for much of what appears in this description. Approx. 6-1/8 x 7-1/2 in. Rare!. (Inventory 278)
