Dawn at Port Lligat

Ships From: New Orleans, LA US

Description: Dawn at Port Lligat. Lithograph by Salvador DalÕ. Created in 1971; Image size: 26 1/4" x 31 1/2". Salvador DalÕ's works became more and more affected by the concept of psychoanalysis devised by Freud as his style matured. DaliÍs works were increasingly shaped into dreamlike illustrations. This was clearly seen in his most famous work the The Persistence of Memory, in which he depicted several clocks as melted in a desert setting with the ocean appearing below the horizon. Dreams consisted of a large segment of his life, because he would take siestas, or midday rests, in which he encounters more and more dreams (Etherington-Smith 9). He considered the siesta as a state that is achieved at the moment that one forgets about oneÍs body or in psychoanalysis the state of the unconscious. Yet, his dreamlike style was combined with his sexual desires to give a variety of works with different themes. Salvador DalÕ was an outrageous and eccentric personality. Although Dali garnered attention through his provocative exploits and theatrical behavior, his paintings were central to the development of the Surrealist aesthetic. Dali's ambition was to "materialize images of concrete irrationality with the most imperialist fury of precision." Dali painted images from a dream world in such exacting clarity and meticulous detail that viewers feel they are entering a hallucinatory landscape. He called these paintings hand-painted dream photographs. They contain strange and bizarre juxtapositions of objects, and the transformation of one form into another form. Catalogue Raisonn_ & COA: This work is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonn_s and texts. 1) Michler/Lopsinger 1284; Field 71-8; Published by Transworld Art, New York Edition 2) A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this work. Aragon/Chagall - Image 11

Description: Aquatint Etching on Japon by Marc Chagall from 1975. Signed and numbered 9 of the deluxe edition of 25 in pencil. Image Size: 15.5 x 11.5 inches Size: 18.5 x 14 in. (46.99 x 35.56 cm). The complete deluxe album compromised of a total of 50 etchings printed in colors, 1975-76, including the separate suite of 25 etchings each signed in pencil and numbered with an edition of 25, and 25 etchings with the text, printed by Atelier Lacourire et FrŽlast, published by Maeght, Paris. Inspired by the poetry of French surrealist Louise Aragon, this lyrically illustrative work depicts a fantastic composition filled with mystery and symbolism. A group of villagers waving flags, are drawn with a sense of urgeny and rashness giving rise to the emotion of the scene. In this fragmented vision, disparate elements, non-upright houses and figures, merge to create a dreamlike historic image. Two of the villagers are Chagall's infamous donkey and chicken, dispersed amongst floating faces that take shape between gestural markings and cool hues of blue and bold emotional strokes of red. Evidence of Chagall's unending imagination, this fantastic piece captivates for both its intriguing narrative and poetic beauty. The Circus

Description: The Circus (M. 289) Original color lithograph, 1960 100 numbered impressions + c. 2000 unsigned impressions for Chagall Lithographe I. There were also 40 signed and numbered impressions reserved for the artist. Illustrated in the 1988 Moscow Chagall Exhibition. Image size: 325x250mm. Marc Chagall on The Circus For me, a circus is a magical spectacle, a passing and dissolving like a little world. There is a disquieting circus, a circus of hidden depths. These clowns, riders, acrobats are imprinted on my sight. Why? Why am I moved by their make-up and their grimaces? With them I travel on toward other horizons. Their colors and their painted masks draw me toward other, strange, psychic forms which I long to paint. Circus! A magical word, a centuries old entertainment parading before us, in which a tear, a smile, a gesture of arm or leg takes on the quality of great art. And what do circus people receive in return? A crust of bread. Night brings them solitude and sadness stretching on to the following day until evening, amid a blaze of electric light, heralds a renewal of the old life. For me, the circus is the most tragic of all dramatic performances. Throughout the centuries, its voice has been the most shrill heard in the quest for the amusement and joy of man. Often it takes on a high poetic form. I seem to see a Don Quixote tilting at windmills, like the inspired clown who has known tears and dreams of human love. My circus pitches its Big Top in the sky. It performs among the clouds, among the chairs, Or in the moon-reflecting windows. In the streets a man goes by. He puts out the lights and lamps of the town. The show is over. Paris l'Opera - Complimentary Signature

Ships From: New Orleans, LA US

Description: This fantastic original lithograph poster was commissioned by the Office of French Tourism to celebrate the repainting of the Palais Garnier auditorium ceiling, done by Modern Master Marc Chagall in 1963-64. This poster shows a detail of this ceiling, focusing on Romeo and Juliet (Sorlier p.96), the famous lovers in a warm embrace as they hover above Paris. 5000 proofs with text over the picture, 200 proofs without text on Arches Vellum, 25 artist's proofs, signed and numbered in Arabic numbers, Several proofs not for trade. Chagall Romeo and Juliette (Romeo and Juliet), 1964 is particularly remarkable due to its impressive size and superb color quality. Combining images of Paris, the figures of Romeo and Juliet and signature elements such as the horse and bouquet of flowers, Chagall captures a sense of romance and history. The great monuments of Paris function as a backdrop for the timeless love of Romeo and Juliet how appear floating through the sky. The lovers appear again encircled by the light of the moon in the upper right-hand corner, possibly symbolizing their eternal unity and undying love. It should be noted that this masterpiece was a gift from Chagall to Paris and that he accepted absolutely no compensation for the titanic task. (Sorlier, pg. 96) Created in 1964, this work was adapted by Charles Sorlier from a preliminary study created by Chagall for the new ceiling of the Opera Garnier in Paris. This particular image was created as a tribute to Berlioz for his rendition of the classic, Romeo and Juliet. Excerpt from Charles Sorlier's Chagall's Posters, Catalogue Raisonné: The decoration for the ceiling of the Paris Opera by Chagall was commissioned by AndrŽ Malraux, then the Cabinet Minister in charge of the Cultural Affairs. The artist hesitated for a long time before finally accepting the assignment. When he went to work, he started by executing a number of small sketches before he created two large dummies, which he submitted to AndrŽ Malraux so that he could select one. Thus once again Chagall demonstrated the humility and integrity which were characteristic of the man and a hallmark of all the work which he undertookÉ. Chagall worked from January to July, 1964, to complete this painting. The opening ceremony for the new ceiling of the Opera was arranged under the supervision of AndrŽ Malraux and took place on the evening of September 23, 1964. The entire corps de ballet participated in the event and there was a performance of Daphnis and Chloe by Maurice Ravel, with sets and costumes by Marc Chagall. To the strains Jupiter Symphony of Mozart the ceiling was illuminated for the first time, revealing this exceptional work to the admirers of the Master. Printed on Arches wove paper and numbered from the edition of 200 in pencil in the lower right (aside from 25 artist's proofs). Hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right with the inscription: Aprs Marc Chagall CH. Sorrier Gravé in the lower left. Printed by Mourlot Freres (Paris) and published by Andre Sauret Editeur, Monte Carlo. Edition unknown. Image size: 296x215mm. The sequence that follows illustrates the windows (which figure the twelve sons of Jacob who became the heads of the Twelve Tribes of Israel) in the order in which Jacob describes his sons in Genesis 49 (see below for full passages): "All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, blessing each one of them with a suitable blessing" (Gen. 49:28). Image of all tweleve lithographs in different order than listed below; Individual image listed in correct order: Reuben. Then Jacob called his sons, and said: “Gather around, that I may tell you what will happen to you in days to come. Assemble and hear, O sons of Jacob; listen to Israel your father. Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might and the first fruits of my vigor, excelling in rank and excelling in power. Unstable as water, you shall no longer excel because you went up onto your father’s bed; then you defiled it—you went up onto my couch! (Gen. 49:1-4) Simeon. Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords. May I never come into their council; may I not be joined to their company–for in their anger they killed men, and at their whim they hamstrung oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. (Gen. 49:5-7) Levi. (Gen. 49:5-7) Judah. Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He crouches down, he stretches out like a lion, like a lioness—who dares rouse him up? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him and the obedience of the peoples is his. Binding his foal to the vine and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, he washes his garments in wine and his robe in the blood of grapes; his eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. (Gen. 49:8-12) Zebulun. Zebulun shall settle at the shore of the sea; he shall be a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon. (Gen. 49:13) Issachar. Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the sheepfolds; he saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant; so he bowed his shoulder to the burden, and became a slave at forced labor. (Gen. 49:14-15) Dan. Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a snake by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse’s heels so that its rider falls backward. I wait for your salvation, O LORD. (Gen. 49:16-18) Gad. Gad shall be raided by raiders, but he shall raid at their heels. (Gen. 49: 19) Ascher. Ascher’s food shall be rich, and he shall provide royal delicacies. (Gen. 49:20) Naphtali. Naphtali is a doe let loose that bears lovely fawns. Gen. 49:21) Joseph. Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring; his branches run over the wall. The archers fiercely attacked him; they shot at him and pressed him hard. Yet his bow remained taut, and his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, by the God of your father, who will help you, by the Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. The blessings of your father are stronger than the blessings of the eternal mountains, the bounties of the everlasting hills; may they be on the head of Joseph, on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers. (Gen. 49:22-26) Benjamin. Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey, and at evening dividing the spoil.” (Gen. 49:27) About The Framing: Unframed.
