Fred Tomaselli 2011

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: Screenprint over archival inkjet. Signed and numbered in pencil lower edge. 181 of 200. Bio: Fred Tomaselli is a contemporary American painter, acclaimed for his collaged works incorporating unconventional materials and depicting surreal scenes. His resin-coated paintings on wood panel feature layers of photographic cutouts placed into winding patterns, often alongside illicit substances such as pills—prescription and otherwise—and hallucinogenic plants and herbs. “Art is really about perception,” he once quipped, “and mine have been changed through visiting other realities.” The resulting works present the viewer with a fantastic, alien landscape, populated with ideas and images sourced from Tomaselli's personal life experience and influence by the AIDS crisis. Born in Santa Monica, CA in 1956, he went on to study at the California State University in Fullerton. His paintings have been met with widespread recognition, notably with his inclusion in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and exhibitions at the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and White Cube in London. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Welling is in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others. Sylvia Plimack Mangold 1994

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: Aquatint and etching. Signed lower right. Bio: After studying at Yale with William Bailey and others, Plimack Mangold worked as a representational painter. Her paintings in the early 1960s were paintings of floors, walls and corners, compositions where mirror images were also introduced, making the space more complex. Eventually, the landscape image filled the entire canvas and focused on individual trees, their branches cropped so as to create the spaces between the limbs and branches of the trees. All the landscape paintings are done from observation. Even as the subject matter of Plimack Mangold's paintings has shifted, her work has always been based in perceptual realism, inviting viewers to observe from up close and mirroring her own process of observation. Mangold received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Neuberger Museum of Art at the State University of New York at Purchase, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, and is represented in the aforementioned museums in Boston, Hartford, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Patrick Caulfield 1990

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: Screenprint, framed. Edition of 45. Bio: Patrick Joseph Caulfield, CBE, RA, was an English painter and printmaker known for his bold canvases, which often incorporated elements of photorealism within a pared-down scene. Examples of his work are Pottery and Still Life Ingredients. In the early 1960s Caulfield's painting was characterised by flat images of objects paired with angular geometric devices or isolated against unmodulated areas of colour. He adopted the anonymous technique of the sign painter, dispensing with visible brushwork and distracting detail and simplifying the representation of objects to a basic black outline in order to present ordinary images as emblems of a mysterious reality. He deliberately chose subjects that seemed hackneyed or ambiguous in time: not only traditional genres but selfconsciously exotic and romantic themes and views of ruins and the Mediterranean. Gradually Caulfield's attention shifted to the architectural elements to which he had earlier made isolated reference. Caulfield began to insert highly detailed passages in the manner of Photorealism into his characteristically stylised idiom, playing to great effect with ambiguous definitions of reality and artifice. Always a slow and exacting worker, he sustained a high level of pictorial invention. During the 1980s he again turned to a more stripped-down aesthetic, particularly in large paintings in which the precise disposition of only a few identifiable elements miraculously transforms an ostensibly abstract picture through the creation of a vivid sense of place.

John Chamberlain

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: Etching on paper. Signed lower right. Edition 38 of 48. Bio: John Angus Chamberlain was an American sculptor. At the time of his death he resided and worked on Shelter Island, New York. Chamberlain????s first major solo show was held at the Martha Jackson Gallery, New York, in 1960. His singular method of putting discarded automobile-body parts together led to his inclusion in the paradigmatic exhibition ????The Art of Assemblage????, at the Museum of Modern Art in 1961, where his work was shown alongside modern masters such as Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso. His works have since been exhibited around the world and have been included in the S????o Paulo Art Biennial (1961, 1994), the Whitney Biennial (1973, 1987) and Documenta, Kassel, Germany (1982) and he has had over 100 solo shows, including Dia Art Foundation (1983); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (1991); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1996); and Menil Collection, Houston (2009). Chamberlain represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1964. He had his first retrospective in 1971, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. A second retrospective was organized in 1986 by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.[18] From February 24 to May 13, 2012, shortly after the artist's death, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum showcased "John Chamberlain: Choices", a comprehensive exhibition of the artist????s work. The exhibition examined the artist????s development over his sixty-year career, exploring the shifts in scale, materials, and techniques informed by the assemblage process that was central to his working method. A special exhibition of Chamberlain's foam sculptures and photographs was on view at the Chinati Foundation in 2005-06.[20] Chamberlain supposedly has a work of art on the moon in the Moon Museum.

Richard Diebenkorn 1993

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: 4 color lithograph, estate stamped. Bio: A highly influential mid-century American artist, Richard Diebenkorn is known for his abstract landscape paintings, in particular the "Ocean Park" series, which he exhibited when representing America at the 1978 Venice Biennale. Diebenkorn????s work is often highly gestural and layered, his use of the medium comparable to that of contemporaries like the Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning, an artist he greatly admired. Diebenkorn, however, preferred California to the competitive New York art scene, and became a leading artist among the Bay Area Figurative painters. Even at its most abstract, Diebenkorn????s work remains rooted in the outside world, and he is celebrated for capturing his surroundings on canvas without representing them literally. Moving between New Mexico, Illinois, and, ultimately, California, his work progresses in tune with the changing architecture and landscape. Diebenkorn also painted portraits, expertly combining figurative and abstract styles in the same picture.

William Eggleston 1984

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: C print from the portfolio: Focus on Photography. Edition 2/15. Signed and numbered on reverse. Taken at the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Art Festival. Bio: A native Southerner raised on a cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta, Eggleston has created a singular portrait of his native South since the late 1960s. After discovering photography in the early 1960s, he abandoned a traditional education and instead learned from photographically illustrated books by Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Frank. Although he began his career making black-and-white images, he soon abandoned them to experiment with color technology to record experiences in more sensual and accurate terms at a time when color photography was largely confined to commercial advertising. In 1976 with the support of John Szarkowski, the influential photography historian, critic, and curator, Eggleston mounted "Color Photographs" a now famous exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. William Eggleston's Guide, in which Szarkowski called Eggleston's photographs "perfect," accompanied this groundbreaking one-person show that established his reputation as a pioneer of color photography. His subjects were mundane, everyday, often trivial, so that the real subject was seen to be color itself. These images helped establish Eggleston as one of the first non-commercial photographers working in color and inspired a new generation of photographers, as well as filmmakers. Eggleston has published his work extensively. He continues to live and work in Memphis, and travels considerably for photographic projects.

Carol Summers 2006

Ships From: Pittsburgh, PA US

Description: Color woodblock and monoprint. Edition 14/75. Signed, titled, and numbered in pencil. Bio: From 1948 to 1951, Carol Summers trained in the classical fine and studio arts at Bard College and at the Art Students League of New York. He studied painting with Steven Hirsh and printmaking with Louis Schanker. In 1954, Summers received a grant from the Italian government to study for a year in Italy. Woodcuts completed soon after his arrival there were almost all editions of only 8 to 25 prints, small in size, architectural in content and black and white in color. Around this same time, along with fellow artist Leonard Baskin, Summers pioneered what is now referred to as the ????monumental???? woodcut. This term was coined in the early 1960s to denote woodcuts that were dramatically bigger than those previously created in earlier years, ones that were limited in size mostly by the size of small hand presses. Summers ultimately refined a relief printmaking process, which would eventually be called the ????Carol Summers Method???? or the ???? Carol Summers Technique????. Summers creates his woodcuts by hand, usually from one or more blocks of quarter-inch pine, using oil-based printing inks and porous mulberry papers. His woodcuts reveal a sensitivity to wood, especially its absorptive qualities and the subtleties of the grain. In several of his woodcuts throughout his career he has used the undulating, grainy patterns of a large wood plank to portray a flowing river or tumbling waterfall.
