Roberto Montenegro (1885 - 1968)

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Roberto Montenegro (1885 - 1968) Watercolor/Paper. Image size: 12.5 x 9 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 13.25 in. Signed and dated '66 lower right. From 1904 to 1906 Montenegro studied drawing and history at the Academy of San Carlos. His teachers included Leandro Izaguirre, Germán Gedovius and Alberto Fuster and his classmates were Diego Rivera, Ángel Zárraga, Francisco Goitia and Saturnino Herrán. He became familiar with Japanese art whose influence can be seen some of his illustrations for Revista Moderna. In 1906, he and Diego Rivera were finalists for a chance to go to Europe. The decision was made by coin toss with Montenegro winning. But Rivera would go months later. Montenegro was first in Madrid, studying at the Academy of San Fernando under engraver Ricardo Baroja. He became a fanatic of the Prado Museum studying the works of El Greco, Goya and Ignacio Zuloaga y Zabaleta. From 1907 to 1910 he was in Paris where he had his first contact with Cubism, meeting Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris . Despite this, he did not have a Cubist period in his work. For two years he studied in Paris as the student of Colin Cowrstuos and exhibited his work in the city. He also traveled to London and Italy. He returned briefly to Mexico in 1910 but by 1913 he was back in Paris, for another six years, studying at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and collaborating with Rubén Darío for a magazine called Revista Mundial. When World War I broke out in 1914, he moved to Barcelona then to Mallorca accompanied by a painter named Gandara, where he painted and also made a living fishing. He also met painter Hermen Anglada Camarasa there. Montenegro moved back to Mexico permanently in 1921. He kept a wide circle of friends that included writers, journalists, artists and politicians. He died in Pátzcuaro on October 13, 1968. This item is framed behind glass.

Thomas Rowlandson (UK, 1756 - 1827) Watercolor

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Thomas Rowlandson (UK, 1756 - 1827) Watercolor "The Review". Titled in lower matting. With Leggatt Brothers Label (UK) Verso. Image size: 7 x 15 inches. In 1765 or 1766 he started at the Soho Academy. There is no documentary evidence that Rowlandson took drawing classes at the mainly business-oriented school, but it seems likely, as on leaving school in 1772, he became a student at the Royal Academy.[4] According to his obituary of 22 April 1827 in The Gentlemen's Magazine, Rowlandson was sent to Paris at the age of 16 (1772), and spent two years studying in a "drawing academy." there. In Paris he studied drawing "the human figure" and continued developing his youthful skill in caricature. It was on his return to London that he took classes at the Royal Academy, then based at Somerset House. Rowlandson spent six years studying at the Royal Academy, but about a third of this time was spent in Paris where he may have studied under Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. He later made frequent tours to the Continent, enriching his portfolios with numerous sketches of life and character. In 1775 he exhibited a drawing of Dalilah Payeth Sampson a Visit while in Prison at Gaza at the Royal Academy and two years later received a silver medal for a bas-relief figure. His drawing of Vauxhall, shown in the Royal Academy exhibition of 1784, had been engraved by Pollard, and the print was a success. Rowlandson was largely employed by Rudolph Ackermann, the art publisher, who in 1809—issued in his Poetical Magazine The Schoolmaster's Tour—a series of plates with illustrative verses by Dr. William Combe. They were the most popular of the artist's works. Again engraved by Rowlandson himself in 1812, and issued under the title of the Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, they had attained a fifth edition by 1813, and were followed in 1820 by Dr Syntax in Search of Consolation, and in 1821 by the Third Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of a Wife. He also produced a body of erotic prints and woodcuts. The same collaboration of designer, author and publisher appeared in the English Dance of Death, issued in 1814–16 and in the Dance of Life, 1817. Rowlandson also illustrated Smollett, Goldsmith and Sterne, and his designs will be found in The Spirit of the Public Journals (1825), The English Spy (1825), and The Humorist (1831).

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Francesco Antonio Simonini (1686 - 1753) "The Expulsion of the Turks from Austria, 1683". Oil on canvas, mounted on board. Sight Size: 16 x 18 inches. At a young age Simonini displayed talents as a painter and at the expense of the Grand Duke of Parma, he was sent to Florence (now Belqium/Holland) to study. In fact, there is every chance that he met with Courtois en route to or from Italy, as Courtois was at that time living at Versailles working on a vast series of panels for Louis XIV and The Regent commemorating great Western European Battles. Upon Returning to Italy, he worked at the Court of Parma, then was lent to the Papal Court at Rome, and he worked almost exclusively on landscape and especially on battle scenes. His paintings are in most major collections and museums. The Barringer painting was purchased in Europe (probably in Spain) in the 1840's by minister D. Moreau Barringer, and belongs to J. Paul Barringer. Painting comes with 1981 Appraisal (see photo)

Description: School of Luca Giordano (1632/34 - 1705) Large 3/4 length portrait of Roman Philosopher Annaeus Seneca. Sight Size: 51.75 x 37.5 in. Overall Size: 62 x 47.5 inches. Museum quality 17th century painting of roman philosopher Annaeus Seneca – a philosopher, playwright, orator, and moralist – was born in the Spanish city of Cordoba in 4 BCE, and was executed in 65 BCE. His period of activity coincided with the rule of three Roman emperors – Caligula, Claudius, and Nero – with all of whom he quarreled. He was initially caught having a love affair with Caligula's sister; he then published a satirical text on the tendency of Romanemperors in general, and of Claudius in particular, to regard themselves as gods; finally, he was implicated in the Pisonian conspiracy to kill Nero. For this he was sentenced to death, and commanded to "remove himself from the world"– in other words, to commit suicide. Seneca accepted this death sentence with total equanimity. The Roman historian Tacitus recounts that Seneca slashed his veins with his own hands. restored relined, in 1970's by Bernard Rabin Conservation Studio Inc. Newark NJ.

Josef Israels (1824 - 1911) Oil/Canvas

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jozef Israels was educated at the Amsterdam Academy (1840) and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Vernet and Delaroche. On his return to Amsterdam in 1847, he worked as a historical and religious painter and increasingly, from 1852, concentrated on Dutch history. The work for which he was best known dates from the 1860s, when his brushwork loosened and he developed a soft tonal range of grays and browns (e.g. Maternal Bliss, 1890, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). In the 1870's he settled in The Hague and became one of the leading members of The Hague School. He has been called the "Dutch Millet" due to his similar subject matter and sympathy for the poor (e.g. Growing Old, 1878, The Hague). During his lifetime Israels won great popularity for his piously sentimental approach to his work. Israels' paintings were especially popular in Britain after Fishermen Carrying a Drowned Man (1861, London, National Gallery) was exhibited at the Royal Academy. His participation in the Paris Exhibition of 1878 cemented Israel's reputation. His son, Isaac (1865-1934) also worked at The Hague, but in a style almost completely independent of his father's. In his later life Israels' work was influenced by his son, towards a lighter, more impressionistic palette. Max Liebermann, his pupil and contemporary, wrote that "Israels first realized himself at an age at which most painters have already produced their best work; and, had he had the misfortune to die at forty, Holland would have been unable to boast of one of her greatest sons." Sight Size: 12 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 21.25 x 24.75 in.

George Harvey (1800 - 1878) Catskills NY

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: George Harvey (New York, Massachusetts / England, Canada 1800 - 1878) Landscape painting of Catskills New York. Man fishing near a lake with mountains in the background. Map of where the scene is attached verso. Oil/Canvas. Sight Size: 7.75 x 9.5 in. Overall Size: 12.5 x 14.5 in. In 1828, Harvey submitted two picturesque* English scene paintings and a floral still life to the National Academy of Design* for exhibition. He listed his address as Brooklyn and on the works described the English scenes as "made from a Sketch Taken in 1819;" and the still life as "A Vase of Flowers Copied from Nature." (Dearinger) He was almost immediately elected to the Academy for membership, which indicates that although he was a relative newcomer to New York City, he had already gained widespread respect as a painter. y 1829, Harvey had moved to Boston, but he contributed to the National Academy exhibition of that year, but did not participate again until 1837, when he was living at Hastings-on-Hudson, New York and had a studio in the New York University Building. When settled at Hastings-on-Hudson, he began his "American Scenery" series, for which he remains most known. Completed in 1840 and edited by Washington Irving, the project had forty watercolors that he intended to have engraved* in England and widely circulated by subscriptions. However, the cost was enormous, he could not get necessary funding; and only 250 copies with four views sold. (The New York Historical Society has about 20 of the unpublished watercolors intended for engraving in England. ) This project meant that Harvey spent much time away from the United States in England and diminished people's knowledge of him in America.
