Huckleberry Finn - limited edition photograph

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: My images are about time, loss, and memory. By photographing and re-contextualizing precious mementos, I have sought to understand how life proceeds and then ultimately disappears. Rediscovering these books led me to realize the power and value of the hands-on experience of reading. As I documented each volume, I was transported to a time and place that allowed for imagination and fantasy. With this series, I examine what it is that we remember and how we honor objects that inspired our early creative thinking. Ultimately, Prior Pleasures is meant to remind us that books can excite and enrich our lives. These photographs are also available in a 12.75" x 12.75" and 20" x 20" - contact the gallery for more information.

Kilim - limited edition photograph

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: 'Anonymous Women: Draped' is a series about becoming the dwelling itself; the double edge of domesticity. The home is a place of comfort but can also camouflage individual identity when decor becomes an obsession, or an indication of position or status. 'Staying home' for some women is a place of power, while others abhor it because of its prison-like atmosphere. This series is made up of various vignettes, where the subject becomes part of her domestic trappings. Her identity is fused with the home. This photograph was taken right before we sold our old house, I took my assistant, lights, a model and camera gear home. We gathered up all the kilim rugs in the house and put my model Justina, who is a dear friend, underneath them. She now wants to add model to her resume.

Silk Road I and II - woodcut and hand drawing on Okawara paper

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: The prints Silk Road I and II, along with the works of other American printmakers, were selected for an exchange show with printmakers from Shanghai. The Silk Road, a trade route built more than 2,000 years ago, connected Europe, Northern Africa, Indo-Asia, and China. My use of nomadic-lines and layers of jewel-like colors is my way of exploring the connections between the exchange of goods and increased cultural richness. With each piece I have manipulated the woodcut layers and then embellished with a hand drawing overlay.

Boudoir - limited edition photograph

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: In 'Anonymous Women: Reconstructed,' the woman becomes part of her domestic trappings and activities. 'Reconstructed' is commentary on obsession with collecting, accumulating designing and decorating, inviting hilarity and pathos about our relationship with things. These are installations made in the studio for the camera that play with color, space and scale and use household objects as subject matter. This particular photograph is inspired from a scene in the movie, Flower Drum Song, when Nancy Kwan sings, "I enjoy being a girl." The setting began with ice cream colored scarves that were bought in China.

In regards to this photograph, someone gave me the apron, which begged to be a picture. When I found the polka dot teapot (that is on her head), we were off and running. Unfortunately, no drapes were available for the background, so we had to improvise with round office labels on black seamless.

Chakra 6 - oil on canvas

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: Chakra are energy centers of the body illustrated as mandalas. The term is from Hindu philosophy. Kundalini or Tantric Yoga suggest there are 6 to 7 Chakras starting at the base of the spine, down to the genital region and on up to the crown of the head. In China there is a different number, often 3 and they are called dan tien . They are part of both Chi Gung and Circulation of the Chi practice. In Japanese Zen meditation the energy center for the body, just below the navel, is meditated on. This leads to, attentive peace, mindfulness within the world, while Tantric Yoga’s aim is more one of transcendence through realization and concentration on the upper chakras. My Chakra are mandalas meant to be viewed as symbols of these energy centers or self-centering in general. It is the individual who should react as they are moved to determine the meaning for themselves. These Chakra are complete within each one or can be viewed placed in a series.

Magnetic Field - original acrylic painting

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: Growth is a theme that appears again and again in my work. It is an enigmatic, rich concept because it can be beautiful, positive and right as well as destructive, grotesque and invasive. Flowers, crops, infants. Tumors, cysts, infections. The paintings themselves grow in layers and I begin each piece without a preconceived notion of resolution. I lay down a simple color field and then the paintings seem to take over and direct their own evolution. Making these paintings is a process of concealing and revealing. It is also somewhat of a catharsis for me; addressing my anxieties in my work somehow allows them to weigh less heavily.

Room of Tatters No. 5 - mixed media on paper

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: This body of drawings continues to explore my interest in the idea of ephemera and the transitory nature of life. In this series, I impose architectural forms and marks upon more fluid and expressive gestures. I begin these drawings very intuitively and over the course of making them, I use the more structural marks to create a sense of connection and cohesiveness. In doing so, I accept both the randomness of life as well as the need to make meaning out of what we are given. My central image was of a room of tatters organized into something meaningful and beautiful.

Cathexis 2 - original painting on canvas

Ships From: Albuquerque, NM US

Description: Cathexis is the focus on a specific idea or object to the exclusion of others — an especially strong form of attachment. The Cathexis paintings echo a letting-go process in order to embrace newness. Cregger begins each piece with shapes and curves using a combination of charcoal, sepia pencil, china marker, and graphite. He then selects deep and bright hues of paint, coloring in the nebulous shapes with thick layers, blending some tones into adjacent ones using brush and knife and thinners. This underpainting takes on the quality of a Gees Bend quilt, (i.e. organic shapes in bold colors without a clear pattern). Here is where Cregger sees early childhood images of his Appalachian great-grandmother and her living room of colorful quilt scraps in paper bags. He continues to add paint, cutting into the thick layers with the wooden end of the brush or another tool in an automatic and personal scribbling. The knife comes into play: paint is pulled back, revealing hints of the original drawing. The textural quality is key to tying these many layers together, and it is this “writing” on the canvas that is a hallmark of his work, whether the pieces lean toward minimalism and formalism or contemporary abstract expressionism.

Description: A cacophony of pastels — blues, pinks, teals, lavenders, and yellows — interacts with the many layers of texture beneath. Hints of more saturated colors peer through the heavy paint application to create depth. The name Mnemonica comes from mnenomics (a memory device that helps recall larger pieces of information), and harmonica (a musical instrument used in blues, American folk, bluegrass, and other grassroots musical genres); this combination of ideas creates a lyrical piece of art with a personal sense of nostalgia for the artist.
