BLAEU W. J.,

Description: BLAEU W. J., JANSZ W. "Pascaarte vander Zee Archipelago...", Amsterdam 1618. Engraved sea chart 55x24,5cm on heavy paper for sea use. The earliest published extended sea chart of the Greek Archipelago, from the third part of "Het Licht der Zeevaert", published in 1618 by Blaeu. The chart is made by Willem Jansz, his name is marked in the Eastern Mediterranean chart on the same Dutch pilot rutter (Het Licht der Zee-vaert, third part 1618). The plate is engraved by Pieter van der Keere. The printed portolans started to supersede the hand-drawn ones in the late 16th century. Dutch specialized sea pilots followed and dominated the sea market, but did not cover the Eastern Mediterranean regions. Only in 1618 with the publication of the third part of "Het Licht der Zeevaert", in 4 oblong for sea use, appeared printed charts of the Greek areas. Taken out the printed Italian Isolaria, that were focused in an island by island presentation, this particular Dutch chart of Archipelago is the first ever printed chart of a big part of Archipelago, covering from Chios and Euboea to Crete and chartering the basic sea route in the Aegean. Extremely rare, as these sea pilots were strictly for sea use. Few light brown spots, short tears along edges & 2 extra vertical folds. Zacharakis 395. EXTREMELY RARE.

FURTTENBACH J., [LEPANTO Naval Battle] from “Architectura Navalis” Ulm 1629 (single edition). Map dim. 34x22cm. Engraved map of the Lepanto naval battle, the Gulf of Patras & the adjacent islands. Rare

Description: FURTTENBACH J., [LEPANTO Naval Battle] from “Architectura Navalis” Ulm 1629 (single edition). Map dim. 34x22cm. Engraved map of the Lepanto naval battle, the Gulf of Patras & the adjacent islands. The map clearly depicts the formation of the fleets, while ships are depicted engaged in battle or sinking. Furttenbach was a German engineer who spent most of his lifetime at Ulm, but has also lived in Italy from 1605 up to 1625. Although published in Germany, the map presents only Italian place/names. It could be assumed that the map has been based in an Italian, late 16th cent. separately printed prototype (as its dimensions and style also suggest), now lost, probably acquired during his stay in Italy. The vividness of the representation could suggest that it was drawn based on eye witness information. One light brown spot & light foxing along center-fold, otherwise extremely fine. Zacharakis 1547. RARE.
