AN IMPORTANT NATIVE AMERICAN NORTHWEST COAST TSIMSHIAN CEREMONIAL HEADDRESS FRONTLET

Ships From: Laguna Beach, CA US

Description: The carved wooden frontlet is the focal point of one of the most iconic ceremonial objects in the art and tradition of the Northwest Coast culture. This frontlet is a veritable jewel worn on the center of the forehead within the once complex headdress trappings. A masterwork of carving, detailed painting, and brilliant abalone shell inlays in the highly refined Northern Northwest Coast style, this frontlet once had a framework attached to it which fit around the Chief’s head, with several various materials tied to it that represented animals of the sea, air, and land, such as a train of ermine pelts artistically sewn together, reaching the ground, or the down from an eagle laced along the top edge of the frontlet along with sea lion whiskers. Frontlets such as this were used in the “Peace Dance” and had very peaceful ceremonial connotations during potlatches.

Condition Report: Two old cracks in the wood, otherwise excellent.

AN OUTSTANDING NATIVE AMERICAN CHUMASH STEATITE OLLA (BOWL)

Ships From: Laguna Beach, CA US

Description: This stone bowl is spherical in form. It was carved out of a large solid chunk of steatite, and was possibly quarried on Catalina Island, then taken by canoe to the mainland. It was worked on the exterior until smooth and symmetrically globular. Next, an opening was carved into the top, and an interior was hollowed out to accommodate ample space for use as a cooking vessel with relatively thin walls. The round opening consists of a lip carved around the edge, which is raised slightly above the smooth shoulder, The lip is incised with cross-hatching upon the entire circumference of the opening. The blackness on the lower half of the olla is evidence of native use involving fire. The entire object exhibits a lovely patina of great age. There has been a recent significant price reduction for this superb work of Chumash art.

AN IMPORTANT PRE-COLUMBIAN XOCHIPALA FIGURE OF A BABY

Ships From: Laguna Beach, CA US

Description: This superbly executed figure of a standing baby with a piercing gaze, and the right hand held to the mouth, the left hand held to the left ear, is adorned with a closely fitted cap which has incised decoration in two areas, in the form of a five-pointed floral design on the right side, and concentric arching semi-circles engraved high on the left side. The facial features are stunningly realistic. The Preclassic Xochipala culture from Guerrero, Mexico is contemporaneous with the Olmec culture, the first major civilization in Pre-Columbian Mexico. The baby seemed to be one of the focuses of the mainstream in Xochipala culture, as there are other lesser depictions extant. This baby is probably from a regal or chiefly family, as he seems to be quite venerably decorated.
