Georgio DeChirico (Attributed): Student Figure Study c.1905

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: Georgio DeChirico (1888-1978)(Attributed): Male Figure Study, Oil on Illustration Board, c.1905. Signed G. DeChirico lower right. Painted in oils on illustration board. This work is possibly a student effort from when DeChirico was studying at the Athens Academy of Art in the early 1900's. It shows corrections, revisions and pencil indications of a Roman Gladiator skirt at the model's waist. A seemingly unrelated sketch in the left background shows the three-dimensional rendition of a such a costume's detail. Pentimenti reveals that the figure is painted over an abstract graphic composition with Greek Lettering and Roman Numerals, which reveals that the board was recycled from what could have been a graphic arts assignment. Note: Photographs showing the signature detail and the pentimenti have had the contrast altered to show details.

Condition Report: The painting has been lightly cleaned and varnished, with minor in-painting of paint losses. Corners of the board show wear. The painting surface shows minor un-repaired abrasions and embedded grime. The painting is installed in a new wooden frame.

White Mountain School: NH Franconia Notch Landscape Oil c. 1870

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: White Mountain School, Artist Unknown:This antique American oil painting dates from around 1870. It shows the vast wilderness landscape of Echo lake at Franconia Notch, New Hampshire, and features two sets of deer under a dramatic clouded sky. Painted at a time when the Hudson River style of painting was dominant, it combines small details with an expansive vista of the American countryside. The painting has a limited color range, reflecting the time period it was painted in - before the easy availability of modern bright pigments. There is a sense of naive charm and wonderment to the entire composition, which sets the placid deer as a focal point.

Condition Report: The painting has been archivally lined, gently cleaned, retouched and coated with non-yellowing varnish. The custom-made gold-metal leafed frame is new. The back features a protective foam-board.

LePage: Trophys of the Hunt with George Goulet Champaigne and Ewer

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: LePage: Trophys of the Hunt with George Goulet Champaigne and Ewer, signed LePage and dated (18)84. Oil on canvas, installed in a hand-carved gilt wooden frame c.1900. Note: There is evidence in the tacking margins that the strainer is not original to the canvas; The strainer is American-made with copyright 1885 (a year after the date on the painting); The size is not standard to American paintings of the period. This leads to the conclusion that the painting is of European origin, shipped to the USA rolled and later framed. The creation of the painting was in the year that Jules Bastien-Lepage died, but the signature does not match his known markings. The high quality of the painting indicates that it was created by an artist of training and stature, but at present no records have been found to determine the identity of LePage.

Condition Report: Older (mid 20th century) partial lining. Recently cleaned and retouched.

Joaquin Tudela y Perales: Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting c.1920

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: Joaquin Tudela y Perales (Spanish, 1892-1970): Country Landscape, oil on canvas, signed Tudela. c.1910. The view is painted on unprimed canvas, in a masterfully direct manner. The paint is thick and buttery, holding impressions of the artist's brush. The marks are energetic and swirling with the influence of the Impressionist masters of the early 20th Century. Joaquin Tudela y Perales had an outstanding artistic career, and was considered to be a Spanish artistic treasure. His works were in high demand, and are included in the national collections of Spain. This painting, which may date from early in Tudella's career, appears to have been sold to a traveler shortly after being created, and transported to the USA where it was mounted onto stretcher modified to accommodate the European metric measurements.

Condition Report: The painting has been cleaned and lined onto a new canvas to strengthen it. A few minor scuffs were in-painted, and a light coat of non-yellowing varnish was added to protect the paint. The canvas is on the original modified stretcher

Lie: 1950 Impressionist Swans Oil Painting In Artist-Made Frame

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: This Impressionist painting of a family of swans in a glowing sunrise dates from around 1940-50, and is signed Lie. There are several known artists with that last name, and we are not sure who this may be. It is also possible that the initials LIE is a monogram. Either way, this is a charming oil painting on heavy linen canvas, and it is installed in a heavy natural-wood frame which has been washed with subtle colors. The frame appears to be original to the painting. Painting size is 17"x20", Frame is 22"x25" The painting has been gently cleaned and re-varnished, but is otherwise as-found. The deep frame has some dings but is an attractive period-piece. A protective backing has been added to the stretcher.

Betty Elliott: 1960's Marine Oil Painting

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: Betty Elliott: This large oil on canvas marine painting shows the red roofs of buildings on the New England shore. The scene is reminiscent of light house keeper's buildings in Maine, and could be from Portland. The painting is framed in a deep-coved wooden 1960's frame which has been painted gold. Canvas size is 24"x30" The frame size is 29" x35" x3.5" deep. Betty Elliott is an artist from Needham, Massachusetts, who was an active painter during the 1960's. At that time she was a teen and young adult. Unfortunately she either stopped painting or had a name change which has made it very difficult to find further information on her career. By the strength of this painting, it is evident that she had good training and became quite proficient. We are hoping that more information about Ms. Elliott surfaces in the near future! The frame shows some dings, but is freshly painted. The canvas is in good, clean condition.

Bruce Wood: Getting Ready, Cape Cod Oil Painting

Ships From: Franklin, MA US

Description: GETTING READY is the title of this highly textured acrylic painting by Massachusetts artist Bruce Wood (b.1951). The painting is a view of young boaters getting ready to launch dinghies on the sandy Cape Cod shore. Bruce Wood's work is inspired by the 19th Century American Impressionists. However, the scene is invigorated by his training as a contemporary artist. The 20" x 24" image is on stretched canvas. It is framed in a traditional plein air styled gold-metal leafed wooden frame measuring 27"x31". Bruce Wood is a painter of New England marine and countryside scenes. As a teen, Wood learned plain air landscape painting in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he studied with Emile Gruppe and a variety of Cape Ann marine painters. He went on to formal art training at Massachusetts College of Art (BFA), and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA). Currently he is the oil painting conservator and director of the Woodshed Gallery in Franklin, Massachusetts, and an active member of the Lyme Art Association, Cape Cod Art Association, Wellesley Society of Artists and several other New England art associations. Bruce Wood's prints and paintings are in the collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, the University of Alabama, and the Rockford Art Museum in Illinois.
