His early work at the Academy was dark and richly colored in traditional European manner, but Art Nouveau is strongly influenced in his work during the subsequent period. He later explored many different styles, mpressionism and Post-Impressionism most dominate among them. The work of Cezanne and Gauguin especially seems to have held his interest. It was also during this period that James became associated with a group of artists known as the Valley of the Moon Society Painters and by 1926 was one of the most prominent members. It was in the company of these fellow artists that James did his most daring paintings, Expressionist in Nature.
