LARGE ARCHAIC FANGHU

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bronze with partial gilding. China, Han and Song Dynasty, 2nd to 10th century An outstanding rarity is this very attractive hu vessel - the most widespread archaic vessel form similar to a vase – here in a rather edged variation known as fanghu. The tall foot has a quadratic base and four trapezoid walls. A similar, yet somewhat smaller design is repeated towards the mouth section. The body of the vase presents an elegant momentum which continues up along the entire neck. A taotie mask with some gilt areas is found on two of the vessel’s sides, their noses form eyelets suspending large rings. The other two walls each present a phoenix in raised relief, also suspending a ring, but from the body. The surface holds areas with a very pronounced patina which drastically adds to the overall effect of the vase along with the different-sized spots of gilding. On the not easily visible bottom of the inside is a quite large inscription with archaic characters (see photo). On the lower, strongly recessed bottom is a grid design in raised relief as well as green patina. In very good overall condition and complete, with noble age characteristics giving a powerful representative effect. HEIGHT 40,5 CM This fanghu was acquired by us at Spink & Son in London in 1994 before going to a larger collection. According to information from Spink at that time, this vessel originated in the Han Period and was reworked with a green lacquer patina and gilding during the Song, befitting for the veneration of antique objects at the time. Illustrated in our catalog ASIATIKA from November-December 1994 on page 40 (No. 43)

The renowned collector of Chinese porcelain Jürgen L. Fischer lived in Ascona, located in the Swiss Kanton Tessin at Lago Maggiore. The extensive size of the collection is largely owed to the family’s fortune, secured by pharmacist August Fischer and his revolutionary invention – the world’s first adhesive made from synthetic resin, the famous “Uhu Alleskleber”, developed in 1932. Jürgen L. Fischer lived until 2013 and was an avid collector of Chinese porcelain whose astonishing taste encompassed a broad spectrum of types, of all sizes and with origins spanning across millennia. Jürgen Fischer passed on his comprehensive knowledge in numerous text books – among others, his large and very instructive book about the art of Chinese snuff bottles and also an antiquarian’s guide to Chinese art. Jürgen L. BIRD PHOENIX ON A TORTOISE

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Terracotta with painting. China, Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220), TL-tested age This large sculpture, exceptionally unusual in its form and thus particularly rare is displaying a very erect, standing phoenix feng, with big legs on the shell of a tortoise, the tail resting on it. The head of the phoenix expresses the creature’s noble character, proud and full of dignity – it is worth noting here that this feature was successfully delivered by using only simple means. The neck of the tortoise gui displays a backwards arching movement, which gives the impression that the tortoise is attempting to repel the phoenix, but could possibly also be a gesture of adoration. In China, the back of the tortoise and its flat plastron parallel the ancient belief of a flat earth and domed sky. The animal is also a symbol of marital stability as well as longevity, and – together with the snake – also believed to be the ruler of the North and in this context, a divinity. The phoenix or "cinnabar bird", on the other hand, embodies the South. This heavy grey clay terracotta was coated with a white base tone and then cold-painted. Remnants of this paint are still present, particularly in the design on the shell, but also in the form of red and black pigments. There are two firing holes as well as deposits of soil on the bottom. This piece was a burial object and tested for age by Oxford Authentication using TL-analysis. According to the certificate all of the four samples taken yielded the same result, indicating an age of 1400 to 2200 years. A minor flaw on one back leg of the tortoise, otherwise in rarely found good condition and complete. HEIGHT 54,3 CM From a North German collection The certificate of Oxford Authentication No. C115a95 of 24 February 2015 is available.

IRON SCULPTURE OF A MARICI (ZHUNTI 準 提) ENTHRONED ON A BOAR

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Iron. China, Ming, approx. 15th century WITH DOUBLE-GOURD MARK. An extraordinarily rare form of the guardian deity going by the Sanskrit name Marici, who is also a Boddhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism. She is presented as a Bodhisattva in the work at hand, but also with rare iconography showing her as a one-headed, two-armed ashokakanta seated in lalitasana on a sukara (boar). In China she is known under the names Zhunti and also Tianhou天后, “Queen of Heaven”. She is a Bodhisattva (Pusa) that appears in many different forms and can have several heads simultaneously (among others a boar’s head), numerous arms and also appear as a warrior (especially in Daoism). At times she is depicted riding a chariot pulled by seven boars. Ashokakanta can also be ashokaghanta when she holds the ghanta (bell) and an ashoka-tree branch attributes. In this very rare depiction the boar is standing on a wide lotus base with large leaves in a rows. The animal has a fierce appearance, especially due to the mane spiked towards the back. Enchanting and at the same time very characterful facial features, which radiate the noble spirit of a Pusa (菩薩). Above the nose is a small urna. Very finely formed hairline, chain adornments around the neck reaching down to the naval, as well as arms and feet. The breasts, which are rarely shown naked as they are here, are delicate yet with a slight maiden-like swelling. The attributes held are the branch of an ashoka-tree (missing) and a bell which is also a symbol of femininity and wisdom. The chignon is adorned with jewels at the front and back, and small garlands hang from a band around the head. Severe corrosion due to age and rust-brown to black patina due to the properties of iron. A mark on the back is not legible, presumably seal-script within a double-gourd border. Very well-preserved, the hand in front of the chest has been restored. HEIGHT 39 CM From a German private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New-Delhi - Vienna A LARGE HEAD OF A BUDDHA

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Red sandstone. China, Song Dynasty, approx. 12th / 13th century A rare massive example of a complete head from a cave temple. The height of the head is easily double that of a normal human head and it can be estimated that the entire sculpture stood about 3,5 meters tall. The work stands out from other Buddhist depictions due to its emphasized contentment and character of joyful existence and indulgence in harmony, a trend characteristic of the upper class in china at the time (highpoint of a court-official culture). The head has a very round form with ears fitted closely to it and the earlobes are not elongated. The locks of hair stand out of the head with an almost dramatic effect and were once adorned with spirals carved in the round, twisting in a counter-clockwise- and (slightly less) clockwise direction. The ushnisha is an only slightly raised, smooth dome. The hairline forms a cusp in the center above the forehead and there is an urna symbolizing nobility and enlightenment above the nose. The heavy half-closed eyelids hold an important role in the overall expression. The enlightened look of all-knowingness, graciousness, mercy and leniency radiates his supernatural power on all who look up to him. The head also has an engaging profile. Some damages due to age, weathering, presumably also repairs. Remnants of a former color coating. Mounted in a dignified manner on a stepped, black quadratic base. THREE-HEADED BODHISATTVA WITH BUDDHA HEAD

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Fire - gilded bronze. Sino – Mongolian, approx. 18th century A rare and well-worked depiction partly as repousse (the base and seat), cast from the hip upwards. The attributes are missing, therefore the precise nature of the Bodhisattva is subject to speculation. The small Buddha head at the very top could possibly indicate an Ushnishavijaya (a form of the White Tara) or a variation of Avalokiteshvara. The three heads are fine in their details and smiling like the smaller Buddha head. There are flaming marks on their foreheads. On Buddha’s forehead is an urna. All four hands present delicately crafted fingers and show the demon-dispelling gesture (two fingers forming horns, the karana mudra), the mudra of discussion (vitarka mudra), which appears three times, and one hand shows the “generosity gesture” (varada mudra). The upper part of the bronze was cast in several parts – all four arms were cast separately. The condition of the gilding varies, but is very good in the lower parts. The faces were not gilt and there are remnants of paint in the hair. HEIGHT 21,3 CM From a Munich private collection. The object was acquired in 1984 from the collection of a Mongolian living in Germany.

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Gold bronze. Tibet, 18th / 19th century Wonderful artistic handcraft, especially expressive Vajrakila, literally vajra means nail, in Tibet called phurbu, a symbol of demon repression. On the uppermost closure a four-part vajra is formed on a lotus base where original colored flags, brocade ribbons and tassels are attached. LENGTH 27 CM From an old German collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New-Delhi - Vienna A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.

AN UNUSUAL SHOULDER CAPE

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Textile, some metal Gau, over 2000 gemstones. India, Ladakh, possibly 19th century A rare and unusual adornment with so many elaborate details that it is hard to describe each completely. It is shaped as a flower with four petals, each cusped at the end, and a perforation in the center for wear around the neck. One of the petals is split along the middle in order to allow placement around the neck and over the shoulders. The turquoise stones are the most striking applications and also the brightest! They are followed by coral, also bearing a beautiful color. Various stones (or beads) form borders or circular medallions enclosing further stitched-on stone- and bead applications. Most of these are in star formations, others include circling bead motifs. There are three elements which take the shape of a gau, the fourth could not be applied due to the petal being split into two sections by the opening. The gau (amulet containers usually worn around the neck) are embellished with turquoise stones around the center. Disregarding the small dark-red stones, there are approximately 530 stones per petal, which totals to approximately 2300 to 2400 stones on this shoulder cape. This “shoulder cape” is naturally quite heavy and was intended to be worn only on special occasions. SIZE 60 x 60 CM From an Italian private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New-Delhi - Vienna A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. Description: Bronze. Sino-Tibetan, Ming Dynasty, ca. 16th / 17th century A highly expressive bronze of the “Green Tara” sitting on an unusually large and accentuated lotus throne in “relaxed pose”. Her right leg rests on a second smaller lotus pedestal. This Tara has a very elegant feminine figure, shows a slight tribhanga and wears numerous chains on her naked torso, but also her arms, waist and ears. She wears a five-jagged crown and a chignon. This and her round facial features are indications of Chinese influence. The right hand shows the wish-fulfilling gesture and her left hand is holding the stem of a lotus flower. DIAMETER 26,5 CM From the Dutch collection Raymond Burleson Burleson worked in the early 80´s in the editorial office of an art magazine in Den Haag, when his growing interest in art also flourished. Subsequently active in international art trade, he specialized in early European art beginning with 15th cent., painting of 17th-19th cent., as well as occasionally also in Asian art. He was active in Europe, as also in America and Asia. Over the years, he became increasingly interested in Chinese porcelain and started to create a collection from 1980 to 1990 with objects of the 19th and 20th centuries, also snuffbottles, little bottles for snuff tobacco. He acquired at a time when one could still affordably buy and choose from the greatest selection. His collection offers today the possibility of learning to appreciate the quality of best latest porcelain designed in the tradition of past periods (often carrying the corrresponding period terms such as Kangxi, Qianlong etc.), as their actual and often astounding quality was truly equitable. Burleson built up a collection over the years of several hundred of the most beautiful porcelain pieces, which now due to his age are gradually being sold.
