Due to the limited space available to list all of the provenance of these items we will give a brief overview of a few, many pieces have additional history and we will be delighted to provide for you at your request.   Some have been acquired  by a private collector in Europe at a charity fund raising  auction that was hosted by a prominent business leader from the Frederiksberg Denmark area. The benefactor  and his corporation are recognized globally, the beneficiaries and charities to this date are ongoing contributing and enhancing to the lives of many.   Others come from the heirs of Sir John  Dorrington and the Vosper estates from Stroud Gloucestershire these items were  purchased by a prominent antiques collector in 2008. Seeking historical and collectible items he attended numerous auctions and estate sales in the area as well as from nearby countries. Goodyer.  His Gallery was founded in 1889 for the sale of Artistic Fabrics and Eastern Curios. The silk exhibition in 1890 was his first showing of what would become to be considered the very finest silks available. The Gallery was an influential and necessary outlet for English goods as well as imported Asian commodities. RARE, 19TH C. GOURD MOTIF CHINESE HORNBILL PENDANT

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: 19th C. The good example of the rare Ancient Arts of Chinese Hornbill carving. Antique pieces of a "golden jade", also to be called "crane's-head" (HeDing), open-work carved recumbent shape of gourd abundant interspersed by overlapping stem and tendrils. The color are beautiful to the eyes; the hornbill pendants shows masterly hand carved, smooth, and beautiful golden yellow interior with bright red tints to the surface of the casque. LOT NOTES: The hornbills are a family of bird found in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia and Melanesia. They are characterized by a long, down-curved bill which is frequently brightly colored and sometimes has a casque on the upper mandible. During the Ming dynasty, the Chinese valued hornbill above jade. They carved the casques, or made them into sheets, colored them with the secretion of the preen gland, and made them into belt buckles for high officials. They called HeDing, which is said to be their approximation of an indigenous name (but means "crane head", and thus many Chinese thought the substance came from a crane rather than a hornbill).
