Avalon (c.1887) by Scott Cameron

Ships From: Lambertville, NJ US

Description: History about the vessel: There was a mad rush to build resorts along the Jersey coast line during the second part of the 1800's. The summer communities of Avalon and Stone Harbor were conceived of in the 1870's, but because they existed on a barrier island, had no access except by water. Jay Gould one of America's young millionaires began to see an advantage of running a railroad line from Camden to Atlantic City and south to the inlet just above Avalon. Only that meant several years of construction so he and the city Fathers of Avalon leased a small paddle wheel steamship from owners on the Hudson River to service the growing communities of Avalon and Stone Harbor. AVALON was then pressed into service during the summer months and run down from Atlantic City to the inlet, and because of her 220 feet and shallow draft she was superbly qualified for the task. "I liked painting her because she's the little 'Steamer' who could. I liked her oversized wheel box and her ornamentation" says Cameron. Scott Cameron is known for his historic boats, especially broadside paddle boats. The paddle boat, Avalon, dates back to 1887.
