Grand Tour Parian Statue of Roman Figure Narcissus

Ships From: Newport, RI US

Description: A Parian Grand Tour Figure of Narcissus. The original of the Narcissus was discovered in 1862 in a nondescript house in Pompeii and was the last antique statue found in Italy to enjoy considerable fame. In a book sponsored by Chiurazzi & Fils, the Secretary of the Naples Museum, Luigi Conforti, described the figure as the most beautiful bronze to have been discovered at Pompeii, Italy. Our figure is 21” tall and the base is 6.5” diameter. This figure is mostly reproduced in bronze. The white figure in Parian impressed the viewer as if they were looking at a white marble statue which was the intent of the factory that produced this example. Condition: small mars to the white surface and at the back of the neck is an incised and black mar as shown in one of the photos. This form was cast in more than one section. We date this figure sometime between 1880 and 1900. Could be Italian or English

Zsolnay Iznik, Turkish design pottery tiles

Ships From: Newport, RI US

Description: A set of 5 Iznik ceramic tiles from The Zsolnay Factory of Pecs Hungary. Circa 1885. This partial set of tiles was probably meant to be used as a frame for a porcelain or pottery ‘picture’. Size and condition: the larger tile is: 13 7/8” long and 3 1/4” deep: 2 1/4” edge flake at one end, 1 1/4” edge flake at the other end (painted under glaze factory mark). 2 tiles 11 1/4” x 3 1/4”, one has a small corner edge flake and the other has a small area on the middle edge where the paint did not fire revealing the white glazed body, incised factory mark and the form # 1650. 2 corner tiles each is 3 3/4” square, hand inscribed number “1650”, edge flakes to each where the indented corners are located. So the tiles fit together as a frame without the bottom section as it is missing. These tiles must have been set into some other object as there is evidence that there is cement attached to areas of the back. A rare and early example of Turkish or Islamic designed tiles. The decorations reflect 15th through 17th century Iznik designs. The Zsolnay factory had a private museum collection of ancient pottery including many examples from North Africa, China, Persia, etc.

Egyptian Revival Letter Holder Ink Well 1920's Toukh Trade School

Ships From: Newport, RI US

Description: An Egyptian Revival desk set: letter holder inkwell. Circa 1922. Size: 15.25” tall x 9.75” deep and 14.5” wide. Material: wood, mother of pearl and bone with glass and brass ink pots. The Tutankamin rage with the opening of the tomb inspired and avalanche of Egyptian designs across the planet. This piece is reminescent of a desk pictured on page 521 the catalogue from The National Gallery of Canada titled: “Egyptomania: Egypt in Western Art 1730-1930” printed in 1994. The description of the desk could also be describing the influences that created our desk set: “This desk is an example of “Pharaonism,” an original, exclusively Egyptian manifestation of Egyptomania. Of relatively short duration (1922-1932) and not directly related to the Egyptomania found in Western culture, it had its roots in political ideology and affected every branch of art.” The label on our desk set indicates that it was made at the Toukh Trade School. The other major trade school during this time period was The Madrasa Craft School. The Madrasa Trade School made the desk pictured in the Canadian catalogue. The school made identical desks for The Palace of King Farouk and for the Mayor of Alexandra. Condition: the base of one of the sphinx has a section of the bone thin base missing; one of the mother of pearl obelisks has three very top sides missing plus there are cracks and re-gluing of the mother of pearl sides to the obelisks. This is a rare and beautiful example of Egyptomania. This item comes apart to facilitate shipping more safely.

A little information about St. Ladislaus of Hungary (A.D. 1095) Ladislaus came to the throne in 1077 and was the embodiment of the ideal knight of chivalry. He died suddenly at age 55 and was buried in Oradea Mare in Transylvania. Information about this statue: Once adorned the high altar of the Inner City Parish Church (Belvarosi plebaniatempolm) in Budapest. Imre Steindl, the architect of the Budapest Parliament, restored the church in the late 1880’s early 1890’s erecting a majolica high altar. The Zsolnay factory was chosen to manufacture the altar. The statues, one on either side of the altar (which was 35’ tall), were designed by Antal Szecsi. During WWII the altar was heavily damaged and was removed from the church. We purchased the statue in Hungary and had it exported with Museum export certificates over 20 years ago. This piece is signed and dated by the artist. This object is located on the second floor of our gallery and the buyer is responsible for arranging for moving and shipping this item.

ALS Paul Paulaki Musurus Bey Turkish Diplomat Artist Poet

Ships From: Newport, RI US

Description: Item # 36. An ASL signed by Paul Musurus Bey ( 1840-1927). Paul (Paulaki Musurus Bey was the son of Constantine (Kostaki) Musurus Pasha, long-serving Turkish ambassador to the court of St. James, from 1851 to 1885. Paul Musurus moved to London with his father as a youth and, apart from occasional light, and very junior, diplomatic duties, seems to have lived the life of a dilettante artist and poet. But the undoubted quality of significance of drawings, reflected as they do much of the pervading influences of the day in French and British art, are testified to by the enthusiastic reception of several drawings donated in the 1930’s to the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, The Ashmolean Museum and The Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and several of his drawings are in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This example of Musurus-Bey’s poetry is written in French. On page size: 5 7/8” x 8 7/8” on a later larger page accompanied with a newspaper clipping of one of his poems. The page is dated 1882, Musurus-Bey would have still been in involved with his diplomatic duties in London.
