The Elephant and The Tiger by Bj?rn Skaarup

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: The elephant, the largest land mammal, has a legendarily good memory. It is also known for its mild and gentle nature, yet occasionally it erupts in rage, destroying everything in its path. The elephant has been used as both a working animal and a circus attraction, both of which are brought together in this rendition. It was once popular to hunt tigers from astride an elephant?s back. This time, however, the tiger has the upper hand, and with stomach replete it can claim victory over its human opponent.

Pagoda Anchorage by Maarten Platje

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Pagoda Anchorage - The starting point of the famous Tea Races. Tea was introduced from China to Europe in the 17th century as a luxury item. It was in the 19th century that tea was transported in large quantities. In that time China was the main center of production. The British East India Company?s monopoly of the trade from China to Britain ceased in 1834. This opening to competition meant that faster ships were needed, as merchants vied to be first in the market with each new crop of tea. Unlike the slower East Indiamen that had carried tea during that company?s monopoly, the tea clippers were designed for speed. Those that had achieved particularly fast passages could usually command a higher price for transporting the cargo than others. In the middle third of the 19th century, the clippers which carried cargoes of tea towards Britain would compete in informal races to be the first ship to dock in London with the new crop of each season. These races were keenly followed in the press. Famous is the Great Tea Race of 1866 with an extremely close finish. Clipper Teaping docked 28 minutes before the Ariel after a passage of more than 14.000 miles and 99 days at sea. Foochow, currently known as Mawei, was the starting point of the Chinese tea trade with Great Britain. Over the years, this port has changed significantly but the Pagoda on the ness in the river still is a recognizable landmark. The painting offers the spectator a view on the Pagoda Anchorage as it was on the 4th of July 1869. The time is 07.00 hours. The clipper on the left is the British Sir Lancelot, built in 1865 by Robert Steele in Greenock. Captain of the ship was Dickie Robinson. The Sir Lancelot was a beautiful ship called the ?yacht of the Indian Ocean?. Small Chinese boats, Sampans, are busy bringing the tea crop on board the clipper anchored in the bay. The clipper behind the Sir Lancelot, is the anchored clipper Falcon. In the middle of the painting you can see the clipper Spindrift leaving the Pagoda Bay assisted by small steam harbor tug. Although Sir Lancelot set sail on the 17th of July (13 days after Spindrift) Captain Robinson spotted the Spindrift in the vicinity of Cape of Good Hope. The captain of the Spindrift then tried to misinform Robinson by flying false name signals. The Sir Lancelot arrived in the docks of London on the 14th of October, four days before the Spindrift. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the subsequent introduction of steam powered ships brought an end to the glorious era of the mighty Tea Clippers. - Maarten Platje, August 2016.

Last of the Great East India Fleet (Clipper Ship Mindoro) by Maarten Platje

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Landscape oil painting of the clipper ship, Mondoro resting at anchor near a shoreline, by Maarten Platje. The Mindoro was launched in 1864. Built at Boston for Silsbee, Pickman & Allen of Salem. She was the last of the great East India fleet, which, for over 100 years, had represented Salem merchants and the American flag. She was also one of three ships which were specially built by John Taylor for the Philippine hemp trade. These were the Sooloo, Panay and Mindoro. Pictures, photographs, and the lines of these three ships can be seen at the Peabody Museum, Salam. Her first captain was Charles H. Allen, Jr., who had her for three voyages. The Mindoro sailed regularly to the East until 1893. On her arrival back to Boston in that year she was wed to Salem and laid up alongside Derby wharf until April,1894, when she was sold and towed to New York, where she was converted into a coal barge. The Mindoro, rated as a ?medium clipper,? was the last tall ship to carry cargo into Salem Harbor. The commercial firm of Silsbee, Pickman & Allen became active in 1798 and continued in business until 1898. It was this association who carried on the tradition of Salem?s East Indies trade well beyond the Golden Age, even though not bringing shiploads of Chinese and Indian luxury goods directly back to Salem. Market demands changed over the course of the nineteenth century and the firm, in true Salem fashion, adapted to the times.

Leda and the Swan by Reuben Nakian

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Classical mythology is fraught with stories of sexual misdeeds by Zeus, King of the Gods. Often Zeus would fall in love with a mortal woman and then transform himself into an animal before acting on his desires. These have been recreated by many masters though the millennia. Here, Reuben Nakian masterfully, yet tastefully, recreates the tale of Leda and the Swan. Zeus, disguised as a swan, seduces Leda who later gives birth to the famous Helen of Troy and Pollux as a result.

Glory Days by Peregrine Heathcote

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Peregrine Heathcote's exquisite paintings conjure up a world of intoxicating glamour and intrigue. His scenes of beautiful women and debonair men set within an idealized historical context rich with art deco remind us of a time when travel was at the pinnacle of luxury. Heathcote's paintings inspire viewers to narrate their own stories, and are the result of the many unique influences on the artist throughout his life.Born in London in 1973, Heathcote spent his childhood living in both Britain and Dubai, which exposed him to the lifestyle of international jetsetters. In London, he was the youngest student ever to study art at the prestigious Heatherly School of Fine Art. As the son of an antique dealer specializing in militaria, the young artist's imagination flourished in his own home, surrounded by a constant influx of relics and antiques from various points in history. His maternal grandfather was a test pilot for the Royal Air Force and Peregrine would often stay with him in Wales listening to tales of adventures and secret missions flown over Europe. As a result of many years spent flying, his grandfather's log-books are filled with detailed information including the plane types and flight destinations. Heathcote has often used these for inspiration to produce compositions with the same planes and romantically-linked couples embarking on or returning from various journeys, echoing the ones that filled his imagination from his grandfather's stories.
