Baby Lamb Inspired by Lalanne

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: For those of you who have been avid admirers of our Old Plank collection of sheep this year, you knew we just had to make a baby lamb; I mean, why not? We are offering the lamb in either resin as shown, or solid bronze and both can be covered with either real or faux fur. Should you be in an area with a moth problem, then I would strongly suggest the imitation fur and to be quite honest, it is rather convincing. Like the larger sheep we are offering, the lamb can be specified in a medium bronze, or an almost black patina. Please note, that this is not a lamb made in France by Claude Lalanne, but rather a new lamb made in the USA by an American artist. Lamb is pictured on left with its sheep counterpart.

Lalanne Sheep (Dark Resin), in the Style of

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: The story behind the Lalanne Sheep (in the Style of) A Life Size Sheep-   About 25 years ago Robin and I were strolling through the Paris Flea Market and sitting right there on the sidewalk of rue des Rosiers was a Claude Lalanne sheep, for the equivalent of a then staggering $5000 and of course I immediately told my wife to just forget it, for who in their right mind would pay that much for a furry life size sheep. After all, who was I to predict that what Claude, and her husband Francois-Xavier Lalanne, sheep would sell for years later.   Ever since that moment we have been searching for a more affordable Lalanne Sheep equivalent, but there was always something just a little off, or out of proportion. In my opinion, this particular Lalanne sheep was the answer to my prayers. Great sheep reproduced face and will you look at those unique sheep legs? How could you not love this Claude Lalanne Sheep (in the style of)?   Price is for one Lalanne sheep knock off.   Click here to see the Solid Bronze Lalanne Sheep.   .

Antique American Potting Bench in Original Paint

Description: Wonderful antique American potting bench, or optionally the metal and painted wood table could be used for a myriad of different applications. The potting table was found in California and was tucked away in an old warehouse and appears to be all original. Would also make for a great outdoor serving table, because of its extra deep dimension. Whenever we barbeque, we always seem to be short of surfaces for those large platters of food and with the metal surface cleanup is a cinch.

Antique French Bookcase or Display Cabinet

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: French mahogany bookcase, extraordinaire is the best term I can think of to accurately describe this immense bibliotheque. Our Old Plank workshop spent over 200 hours rebuilding the carcass and then it went into the finishing for a traditional hand applied French polish. This is only one of a few cabinets that we have seen with solid brass bars dividing the glass panes, which really gives it an extra bit of elegance. All shelves are fully adjustable and the entire bookcase disassembles for easier ingress and egress into your home or office. This particular piece was made during the Restauration period of French furniture, which dates from 1815-1830, or right after Empire and just prior to Louis Philippe.

Antique French Ebonized Louis XVI Commode

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: Antique French Louis XVI style commode that our Old Plank restoration department completely restored from the bottom up, including hand-stripping, without the use of chemicals and finishing with a proper ebonized finish which allows for the grain of the mahogany to still show through. Hardware is original as is the marble, but I have to admit that the marble on this Louis XVI commode does have its share of water marks, not staining. We would be happy to lightly sand the marble, but it would then have a honed appearance. The drawers of this French commode are hand dove-tailed and I noticed that all the drawer bottoms have been replaced while still in France. This a great look for a reasonable price.

French Louis XVI Style Commode by Stumpff JME

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: On a general rule of thumb in today’s marketplace in order to sell a Louis XVI style commode, one has to ebonize the finish, but not in this case. Our newest addition comes from the seacoast town of Boulogne-Sur-Mer, on the northern part of France and this chest is marked; STUMPFF (Jean Chrysostore) a registered Master cabinet-maker in 1766 with the JME hallmark. We carefully went through the structure of the cabinet and only fluffed up the old French polish exterior, as to try and make it look as though it was not touched. With beautiful never repaired Sainte Anne grey marble, this becomes one exquisite chest of drawers.

Antique French Commode

Description: Antique French commode and this one is much older than 99% of the French commodes we typically get in. Everything about it screamed 18th century and the chest did require several weeks in our old plank workshop, before it was ready for the finishing department. We tried not to refinish the antique commode, but rather enhance what was already there and we managed to bring life back the vibrant and incredible graining of the top. The commode is made of French walnut and cheerywood and has maintained its wonderful old patina. All the drawers have been rebuilt, including the styles and rails and good to go for the next 100 years of service.

English William and Mary Period Chair c.1700

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: The William and Mary period of English furniture dates from 1689-1702. After assuming the throne, they imported truly comfortable furniture from Holland to England for the first time. The newly introduced upholstered style was well received by the common folk and caught on very quickly. This particular William and Mary chair, was previously owned by an executive of the Ford Motor Company, who was stationed in England and later moved to Switzerland, before retiring in the South of France in the small town of Albi, which was settled during the Bronze Age (3000-600 BC). He fancied himself as a collector of 17th century English furniture and after he passed away, we purchased this and several other 17th century items from the estate. The chair is exactly how it was removed from his home and I kind of like the old fabric and it happens to be very comfortable. **Seat height is 17"

Pair of French Leather Art Deco Club Chairs

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: Pair of French leather club chairs that our Old Plank workshop and upholstery department restored from the bare wooden frames up. We generally stock between 75 and 100 leather French club chairs and as time allows, we pullout a pair and start the rebuilding process. Virtually every club chair requires wooden corner blocks installed in the frame in order to tighten it. Then the leather is removed and we will glue a heavy fabric on the reverse side to prevent it from separating. Whenever possible, we will save the original leather and treat it with special oils. The pair of club chairs shown here, were purchased without leather seat cushions, so we made new ones and dyed the leather to match. Our shop exclusively uses horsehair, or shredded coco for padding and tied the coil springs eight-ways by hand. These are exceptionally comfortable, because of their extra seat depth. Next week we will be completing a pair of the infamous French mustache back club chairs and they will be listed on 1stdibs as are all of our club chairs.

French Art Deco Leather Club Chairs, Restored

Description: Beautiful and unusual at the same time, for although these French Art Deco club chairs are on the more petite scale, because of the way their arms are designed, a much larger person than you could image fits quite comfortably. Trust me I know. This pair is old enough, that when they were first made they would have had velvet seat cushions filled with down and not leather. Our upholstery and leather dying departments got together and I think made an incredible pair of matching new leather seat cushions and of course stuffed with real down feather for that extra bit of comfort. Set of 8 Painted French Louis XVI Side Chairs

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: We have been searching for a correct size and “comfortable by American standards” Louis XVI side chair. Copied from an original circa 1800s French Louis XVI side chair in the style of Jacob from Chateau de I’ Oise in France. The seat was slightly wider and a smidge deeper and the back relaxed a few more degrees which made for the perfect French Louis XVI side chair. They just sat so nice that we decided to reproduce them; the old fashion way, by hand and in France. Notice the radius carved corners and if you look carefully, you will see that they are slightly different and all the edges have sharp crisp carving marks, which is only accomplished when you hand-carve. All connections are Mortise and Tenon. The upholstery on our set of eight black leather chairs, have been padded with horsehair for the seat bottom cushion and shredded coco for the seat backs, just like the old fashion way.

Description: Antique French Louis XVI style ebonized bookcase, or as the French would all it, a bibliotheque. Our old plank workshop completely disassembled the bookcase and hand scraped and hand sanded the solid mahogany cabinet, before sending it into our finishing department. Once in finishing we slowly applied multiple layers of dark brown and black penetrating stains which have given the bookcase an almost ebonized finish. I say almost ebonized, because we allowed for the brown tones to show through, which in turn makes the bookcase look warmer, much as an original ebonized finish would do.

Description: The French would call this a “Grande Bibliotheque” and that pretty much says it all. Our Old Plank restoration department, completely disassembled the entire bookcase and rebuilt every connecting joint, while still allowing for the cabinet to be taken apart and carried up the smallest of staircases. The mahogany was hand-scraped and hand-sanded, before we applied a multitude of stains to give it an old ebonized finish, which still allows for the fine grain of the wood to show through. Infinitely adjustable shelves, a shallow depth, original wavy glass and Classic Louis Philippe good looks are tough to beat.

Antique French Bookcase and Desk

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: Antique French formal library bookcase from the Restoration period, that slotted between the Empire and Louis Philippe time line of 1815-1830. This was a reaction against the monumental pomp of the Empire period, when furniture became less fancy, while still looking elegant. The French would call this bookcase, d’époque, meaning it was made during the Restoration period and not just of the style. The bookcase was restored with paint enhancement (fancy term dealers use for new paint), but it does have the right old paint patina about it and most importantly it functions as well today, as it did 200 years ago. The bookcase was found just north of Lyon in the small town of Villefranche sur Saône, France.

The French bookcase was received in such a nice original condition and other than tightening things up a bit, really required no restoration, which is quite rare these days.

French Metal Bookcase

Ships From: Chicago, IL US

Description: Very unusual metal bibliotheque (bookcase) or display piece. We purchased this in the town of Vannes, which is a medieval walled city in the Brittany region of France and is over 2000 years old. The antique dealer we purchased this from, stated that it was made circa 1900, but for me, I think it is a bit newer. Great look and small enough to fit in a multitude of areas. Measurements include the finials. The body is 31" wide and 11.75" deep.
